FAQ

Q – How many students are enrolled at CAA?

A – We have 194 students in our K-8 grade program, and 24 students in our Great Start Readiness Program (4 year old pre-school). CAA accepts students throughout the year, pending available space.

Q – What grades are available at CAA?

A – We offer a full-day preschool program, full-day Kingergarten, and 1st through 8th grade.

Q – What about transportation to and from school?

A – While CAA does not operate our own busses, qualifying students may receive bus passes for use on the CATA service. In addition, the school will attempt to help you coordinate ride sharing with other families in order to help alleviate the stress of morning arrival and afternoon dismissal.

Q – What is the cost to attend Capital Area Academy?

A – NOTHING!!! The academy is a tuition free public school with a charter to operate within the local school district, grades preK-8. It has a capacity of 225 students in K-8.

Q – What makes CAA different?

Answer – Many things make CAA an outstanding place for your child(ren) to attend.

A-A safe environment where high student achievement is the focus.

B-A rigorous educational program (the Mosaica Educational Model) combining core fundamentals with the arts, and develops critical thinking skills.

C-A special focus on reading, writing and math.

D-The Paragon Scoial Studies Program engages students and incorporates art, music, and dance into learning.

E-High expectation for students, staff, and parents alike.

F-A dress code and strict code of conduct.

G-Free full-day kindergarten and pre-kindergarten program.

H-A longer school day.

I-Pre and post-testing to gauge student progress.

J-Technology in every classroom including computers and LCD projectors.

K-Each child has their own Personalized Student Achievement Plan.

L-Parental involvement and communications. Parents are expected and encouraged to partner with our staff and they are directly involved with our Board of Directors.

Q – What is the daily schedule?
Answer- School opens at 7:30 AM for breakfast for those students that wish to participate. All other students begin to arrive at 7:45 AM, and morning announcements, Pledge of Allegiance and STARS pledge are held at 7:55 AM prior to studnets being dismissed to class. Classes begin at 8:00 AM.

In K-4 classes, from 8-10 AM, all students study reading and writing, followed by one hour blocks of math and science, and a 1 1/2 hour block for Paragon.

Middle School students have class blocks of 90 minutes, ensuring that our highly qualified teachers have ample time to teach each and every student.

Lunch schedule is:
K-1 11:00-11:30 AM

Pre-K 11:30 in the classroom

2-4 11:45-12:15 PM

5-8 12:15-12:45 PM

Specials classes occur at various times throughout the day. Check with the teachers for specific times for specials.

Students also spend a minimum of 15 minutes daily on the computer using software that helps aid in reading, math, and writing, by developing student skill sets in areas where they are most challenged.

Dismissal begins at 3:22 for bussing and walking students, and at 3:30 for all other students including Pre-K.

Q – What about the food program?

A – Capital Area Academy contracts with Secret Recipes Catering to provide a nutritional and tasty breakfast and lunch. Our lunch program includes a salad bar and students may eat as much fruit and salad they care to. All meals meets all federal guidelines for food service.

Breakfast is $1.75, and hot lunch is $2.40. CAA participates in the Federal lunch program, meaning for those that qualify, there is either a reduced price for meals or they may be free!!!

Q – Does Capital Area Academy have a school board?

A – Yes!!! CAA has a Board of Directors, appointed by Central Michigan University, to operate the school, ensure acaemic success and adherence to all state and federal guidelines and expectations.

Our Board of Directors has seven seats, two of which are currently vacant and available for a parent or community member.

Board meetings are held at CAA in the media center, the third Wednesday of the month, beginning at 5:30 PM. The public is highly encouraged to attend.
